An ice storm was in progress so we didn’t have to drive to Portland for our first talk with the OHSU surgeon, Dr. Enestvedt. We just talked over the phone. That saved us a long drive in bad weather. He went over possibilities with us that sounded hopeful but it was all depending on a deep dive review of the scan and connecting with the tumor board–all the involved health care team.
We found out the following week that the doctors at OHSU reviewed the PET and CT scans along with several older scans and their tumor board determined there is no surgical solution. They can’t do a resection (removal of the infected portion of the liver) because the cancer is entwined with an artery and vein. And they can’t do a transplant because the cancer has spread to two new spots in my liver. They recommended meeting with the Kaiser oncologist.
Just over the last few days I had a lot of high fevers and we ended up spending a day in the ER. We tried out a new local one at a private hospital and went early in the morning so not much of a wait. I ended up on IV antibiotics and came home. We are going to have to get the drains replaced sooner than later because things are not flowing well and causing problems in the liver. This is a common occurrence with drains.
We’re driving up to Salem on Feb 7th to meet with an oncologist. We have a lot of questions and will have to decide where we go from here.
