March 14, 2024 Health Update

From March 6-12 Michael gained a little strength every day. By Monday he drove by himself to get coffee and by Tuesday morning he even did some exercise with light weights for his upper body. I was happy on Tuesday morning. I thought my update was going to be: No news is good news. Michael is improving.

Then he got another fever Tuesday around 1pm. Not high but he did have the shakes a bit. I went to teach and came back around 2:45. The shaking had continued and so we decided not to mess with this. Last time the infection went into his blood so we were off to the ER and thankful we have one close by that we like. After 5 hours, several needle jabs, IV antibiotics, and some more fluids, he was released but with a referral to see an infectious disease doctor the following day to make sure the best antibiotic was administered.

The infectious disease doctor was a force of nature. She agreed with the ER doctor that Michael has a UTI infection and Bacitrim was the right antibiotic. She was all over Michael poking him and prodding him, pulling off his bandage, which incidentally had started leaking again. We’re still waiting to hear if he also has a blood infection. I am hoping we can keep seeing a doctor like her so we can be more specific with the antibiotics in the future.

While she was examining Michael, she decided to send him back to ER to get an ultrasound of his legs just to make sure he hadn’t developed any blood clots. Geez, 2 days of ER in a row. We left the ER right after the ultrasound and didn’t wait for the results; it was 6 pm and we were hungry. An ER doctor called us within 45 minutes to let us know the scan was normal.  So back to just worrying about cancer, infections, and a leaky drain – not blood clots.  Haha!

    Dear sweet Sarah and Mike.
You both are a force of nature. I’m happy to see this update. Happy to hear about the gaining of strength and energy. Glad to see you found an ER doctor you like! That’s a gift. Here’s to the infection going away, the drains to stop leaking and cancer to get tired of fighting Mike’s strong spirit. Love you both.

I find it very frustrating that you always have to see an ER doctor! It would be so nice if you could see Michael’s doctor! But that’s not how things seem to work any more. Cheers to you two for keeping at it and finding good Ears!
